Simple answers

I was reading this article on Time's website about D&D and why it's not more popular than it is.

Of course, they mention the problem of the uninitiated person asking, "So, how do you win?"

In the past, every time I've been asked that question, I went into some paraphrase of Frank Mentzer's Basic Set about how there's no win conditions, you keep playing the same character, blah blah blah.

Probably lost more players than I gained that way.

From now on, I'm going to give a simple answer whenever I hear that question.

Q: So how do you win?

A: By playing.

  1. I think the problem is that most people look at a game as something fixed that takes a few hours and it's done and behind you. While D&D has the trappings of a game, it's more of a pastime than a game.

That said, like lots of people suggest maybe getting them to play a henchman or hireling for one or two sessions might help them see that it's a different way to look at a game and actually take it up.
