Self-Inflicted Punishment

Yesterday morning, and again last night, I sat myself down and forced myself to finish reading the 4E Essentials Rules Compendium's chapter on Powers.

Man, that was a slog.  No wonder I put it off for so long.  It's not only a really boring explanation of all the terms used in powers, it's also apparently written for complete morons.

Seriously, people complain about the Mentzer sets being written at a young reading level, but this was painful.

The skill chapter comes next, but Powers may have sapped my will to actually figure out 4E.  I mean, that's the heart of the game system right there, folks.  Who cares about the rest when the bread and butter is so stale?

  4. You know, Woodstock, I used to delete your posts for your own protection. I mean, seriously, when you first started spamming me, your worst insult to a thirty-something guy with an OSR blog was to call me a 'nerd.' Seriously weak.

Anyway, I'll let you continue to dig your own hole here. Please, carry on.

  5. Yes, that is 4E, in a nutshell. Written for young children's reading comprehension level and nothing but a bunch of powers that are all slight variants of each other (push this, pull that, do this much damage, save info... repeat for next power.) Boring as hell, and does not in any way contribute to a more fun session - just draws out combat to the point it becomes a slog.

I +1 this sentiment exactly. I was super excited to get the 4E books because I really liked 3.X and I was interested to see what they had done with 4E. But, those D&D books were the first ones in my history of gaming that I gave up on reading after the first 30 minutes or so. Reading power after power that, as you said, is basically just a variation of "Weapon Damage + STR + Push 1 Square" or "Weapon Damage + INT + Push 1 Square", etc. just got so boring.

The DMG and the Monster Manual are slightly better, but the Player's Handbook is just dreadful.

And for full disclosure, I should also point out that I also get bored reading through the various class powers and feats in Pathfinder even though I'm currently playing that system.
