I may very well be wrong, but I thought 4th edition was just what some people online are calling it as a shorthand for Gamma World, as powered by the 4th edition D&D rules. Did WotC actually call it "Gamma World 4th edition?"
Could well be. I don't read WotC's homepage. They sure jumped on the 3E/3.5E/4E nomenclature and claimed it as their own if they didn't start it, though, so I just assumed it was their in-house abbreviation for it.
Now, my comments here aren't to say I don't want to try it out. I'm willing to give it a go and see what sort of crazy fun it is. I just got that grumpy 'get off my lawn' feeling about the name.
If my irritation needs to be redirected, so be it. "Internet, get off my lawn!"

Maybe they should have called it "4th Edition 2nd Edition 4th Edition".
