So, not only did news of "One D&D" drop this week, we also got the announcement of the launch of 5E material translated into Japanese this week.
It's a pretty decent commercial. And if you don't speak Japanese, don't worry, the video has English subtitles that are a good translation of what's spoken.
But it is a bit funny that they're launching this right now.
It's strange timing, but the Japanese market is probably a secondary concern (at least regarding "One D&D" or whatever the latest-greatest edition is) to WotC. Otherwise, they would have translated the books YEARS ago. The Japanese have had a large tabletop community for decades, and 5E has been around since 2014...it's taken this long to translate the core books? A little hard to believe.
ReplyDeleteI've got the Japanese 3.5 PHB (only 3E book I still own in physical format). 3.5 came out in 2003, and the Japanese translation was published in 2005. So it's not like they couldn't have done the translation earlier. But yeah, maybe the J-market wasn't as lucrative as they thought it would be 15 years ago, so they never bothered with a 5E translation until covid quarantines shook everything up?
