I guess it must have been 3E/PF I was thinking of for the slow fall at the end of Fly.

Re: equipment not listed, I guess chalk it up to Frank assuming 10~12 year olds like myself needed hand holding and to get a feel for the basics before becoming experts at DMing (weak-ass puns intended).Dennis Laffeyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03053699552003336733noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5255299705122830812.post-86733699967354495092016-05-12T03:10:51.002+09:002016-05-12T03:10:51.002+09:00RE Equipment Not Listed:

In this case, the DM must carefully consider whether such an item could be found for sale and, if so, how much it would cost. The item should then be added to this list."

What could be the purpose in advocating the other way? To preserve the carefully researched fantasy economy created by the authors?

I've argued before that Mentzer's Basic/Expert represents a fundamental shift in tone that has a direct impact on gameplay. This is just another example, LIMITING participants instead of EMPOWERING them.

RE Fly

By comparison, in B/X the random duration remains the same, but there's no such text limiting knowledge of the duration to the DM.

There IS similar text with regard to potions, however (in the treasure section), though that's with regard to all potions (there isn't even a potion of flying in the Basic book). To me, that would indicate a player M-U would know the limitation of their own spell (assumed PC competence), as opposed to the unknown property of a randomly found potion. But it could certainly be interpreted the other way.

[BTW, the "fly" spell text is found in both the Basic and Expert books of B/X...Mentzer's text regarding only the DM knowing the duration is present in NEITHER entry]JBhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03263662621289630246noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5255299705122830812.post-52034491435115515182016-05-12T03:00:01.798+09:002016-05-12T03:00:01.798+09:00The Rules Cyclopedia, Labyrinth Lord, and AD&D...The Rules Cyclopedia, Labyrinth Lord, and AD&D2 give a duration of 1d6 turns plus 1 turn per level for fly, and no slow fall when the spell ends. Pathfinder gives a duration of a minute per level, and does have 1d6 rounds of slow falling when the spell expires. I don't have access to any other versions of The Game to compare.thekelvingreenhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01928260185408072124noreply@blogger.com
