It's usually used in combat, and the missile(s) shot off as soon as the spell is finished. So it's purely academic at my gaming table.

Also, one thing to consider may be that the terminology of Round and Turn wasn't so rigidly defined early on. I think OD&D may have used the two interchangeably. So that may be where the discrepancy comes from. In the Mentzer Basic Players Manual...Magic Missile:
In the Mentzer Basic Players Manual (MBPM) the description of the spell is as stated. In the Rules Cyclopedia the description remain 1 ROUND duration, so we should feel good in assuming this is right. However, the reference part of the MBPM show the duration as 1 TURN (MBPM p.35). As the solo adventure use of the spell on page 6 have it used fast, it doesn't tell us anything, and we are therefore left to interpret the text part of the spell – if we don't have the RC, or think it a simple cut'n'paste error. And the text rightly indicates the possibility of a longer duration. But it's really up in the air, rules as written. One thing though. One would likely check page 35 if in doubt – and only having the basic set, so played it would be a TURN I believe.
There is of course a lot more to it, and the 1 ROUND is sadly right as I have dug up, but this shouldn't be more then a comment, so I leave it here, and maybe get to a blog post on it in… three to four years from now :DAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5255299705122830812.post-45045743666921354372016-09-18T06:38:04.993+09:002016-09-18T06:38:04.993+09:00This comment has been removed by the author.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5255299705122830812.post-52612788698154230672014-02-02T22:00:16.438+09:002014-02-02T22:00:16.438+09:00Although I prefer B/X or OD&D these days, Ment...Although I prefer B/X or OD&D these days, Mentzer's boxed set was my entry into the hobby and my first love. It's been fun to read your thoughts as you become reacquainted with some of this stuff. This has been a great read, and I hope you keep at it!Dan Lawsonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03262019864971203627noreply@blogger.com
